Reality TV shows, aaarrrggghh!

I can’t have been the only one who gave a silent prayer of thanks when it was announced that this year will see the last ever series of Big Brother. This ran out of steam a long time ago; and where once they made a fortune form the commercial breaks by advertising things like cars and televisions, the last few series they have things like dishwasher liquid and mouthwash.

The problem with reality shows is that as soon as we bid farewell to one, another 3 or 4 appear. This is trashy TV at its best, yet the audience numbers are huge. We’ve got D list, at best, celebrities trying to skate, or dance, or survive in a jungle where they do such entertaining tasks as cleaning a Koala bears teeth with an electric toothbrush.

What is our fascination with these shows? If they were superstars then yes it would be interesting. The whole idea is that they want to show that these ‘celebrities’ are the same as you and me. Erm excuse me, they are the same as you and me! A 3 month stint in some obscure channel 5 show with a regular audience of 10 does not a celebrity make!

Then there are the ones who don’t have any kind of career elsewhere who make a living from appearing on everyone of these shows going. As their last claim to fame was appearing in a toothpaste commercial 5 years ago, making fools of themselves on TV every night isn’t going to endear them to us enough for us to want them to come back into the, sort of, limelight.

Get some real celebrities or get off our screens, simple!
