A clinical service for girls and adolescents with gynaecological
problems has been held, in conjunction with colleagues from the Royal
Liverpool Children’s Hospital, Alder Hey, since 1989. Out-patient clinics
are held at Alder Hey on the first Wednesday of each month. Girls who
require surgery are normally admitted to Alder Hey. Miss Anne Garden,
the Consultant in charge of the service, holds an honorary appointment
as Lecturer in Child Health (Gynaecology).
This unit is one of the few in the country to provide a
combined paediatric and gynaecological service. Trainees in gynaecology
and paediatrics from other regions often attend to gain experience in
the sub-specialty. The clinical problems dealt with cover the whole spectrum
from common ones such as teenagers with period problems to rare conditions
such as congenital abnormalities of the genital tract requiring specialist
reconstructive surgery.
Miss Garden is the editor of the recently published textbook ‘Paediatric
and Adolescent Gynaecology'. |
