Gynaecological Theatres

There are five theatres each with their own anaesthetic room and scrub area. On average over 8,000 operations including breast surgery are carried out each year. A large highly trained professional and dedicated staff is needed to maintain the quality and high standard of care that has come to be expected from the Liverpool Women’s Hospital.
Each working theatre comprises of a range of clinical and support staff. The sister-in-charge allocates the appropriate staff to each theatre and ensures that everything is in place for each day’s theatre list to start at 09:00. Medical staff compiles daily operation lists. All patients are brought to theatre on a trolley by theatre assistants and accompanied by a ward nurse. They are checked in the forward waiting area, before being taken to the anaesthetic room.

Once again checks are carried out to make sure they are the correct patients prepared for procedure. Most patients will have a general anaesthetic and many will have been visited on the ward by the anaesthetist prior to coming to theatre. A leaflet "About Your Anaesthetic" is sent out to patients with their operation date. At the end of the surgery those having major surgery are transferred directly onto their bed before being moved into the recovery area.
