The day ward is a 14 bedded ward situated within Rosemary ward.
It is open between 7.30 a.m. and 9p.m. Monday to Friday. Operations
are performed every morning and afternoon. If you have been informed
that your operation is in the morning, you should not have anything
to eat or drink from 12 midnight the night before. If your operation
is planned for the afternoon you may eat a light breakfast of tea/coffee
and toast before 7 a.m. and nothing to eat or drink thereafter.
What to bring with you.
Please bring with you :
- A night-dress or pyjamas
- a dressing gown and slippers
- a hairbrush or comb
- paper tissues
- a towel, flannel, soap, etc.
Although your stay with us is only a short one, you will probably
feel more comfortable in your own night clothes.

shop and trolley and some change for the telephone

After your operation
Once you have returned to the ward and have had time to recover
from your operation you will be given something light to eat and
drink. You will usually be able to choose between a selection of
sandwiches, soup, biscuits, etc.
Going home
Most patients are discharged after a few hours rest, but if for
some reason you are not fit to go home, arrangements will be made
for you to be admitted to a ward in the hospital.
Discharge information
- Your operation will be explained to you by the nurse who discharges
you.
- If you need to be seen in the outpatients clinic , an appointment
will either be given to you before you are discharged or will
be sent to your home. Please check that the date and time given
are convenient. If you need to cancel or re-arrange your appointment,
please contact patient services department between 8.30 a.m. and
4.30 p.m. on 702 4020 (an answer phone service operates on this
number out of hours.)
- Any treatment the doctor prescribes for you will be given to
you before you leave. This will be enough to cover you until you
are able to go to your own doctor for a further prescription if
this is needed.
It is important that you observe the following:
- You must be accompanied home by an adult
- It is quite normal for you to feel tired following a general
anaesthetic and you should go straight home and rest following
discharge from hospital.
- It is not advisable for you to drive or operate machinery for
24 hours following a general anaesthetic.
- If you have a slight pain and discomfort after your operation,
take some paracetamol but it is important that you follow the
instructions on the pack.
- You might have some slight vaginal bleeding for the 24 hours
after your operation and again this is quite normal. If this continues
or becomes heavy, contact your G.P or come to the emergency room
at this hospital where you can be assessed by a doctor.
- If you have had sutures put in, these will dissolve within 10
days. If you have any discomfort or pain from these, contact your
G.P or the emergency room at this hospital.
- You should be able to go back to work within 48 - 72 hours,
but this depends on the demands of your job and how you feel after
the anaesthetic.
